“Change happens through movement and movement heals.”
— Joseph Pilates

The History of Pilates
Pilates began with Joseph Pilates, who developed his method in the early 20th century as a way to strengthen the body, improve posture, and support overall health. Originally called Contrology, his system emphasized precise movements, breath, and mindful control — principles that remain at the heart of Pilates today.
Over time, the method has evolved into contemporary Pilates, blending Joseph’s foundational exercises with modern movement science, updated equipment, and an expanded understanding of anatomy and wellness. This evolution allows Pilates to meet the needs of today’s diverse clients while still honoring the roots of the practice.
At Pilates Achieved, Helen’s approach is a blend of classical and contemporary work. Helen honors the tradition of Joseph Pilates while integrating modern variations and supportive tools, creating a balanced method that is both grounded in history and responsive to today’s bodies.
